Mastering Communication Styles

Read, Engage and Influence With Integrity

Engineer. Designer. Marketing Director. Sales Manager. Each role embodies a profoundly different communication style. Each can also become a master communicator. This course is your road map.

Master-Communicator

Master communicators understand the nuances of all communication styles and have the versatility to adapt their approach. This workshop, taught both virtually and in person, focuses on everyday situations, improving your communication skills immediately. You’ll develop skills that shift the way you interact with peers, customers, managers, and the C-suite (and probably your personal connections too). You’ll learn to recognize assertive behaviors, like the pace, quantity, and volume of speech, plus gestures, posture and eye contact. You will learn responsive behaviors, including tone of voice, focus of subject, time orientation and expressions.

About This Workshop: GrahamComm's Mastering Communication Styles

GrahamComm's Mastering Communication Styles workshop is built on the Analytic, Expressive, Driver, and Amiable behavioral framework. You will learn to recognize the behaviors that define each of the four main styles and then practice adapting your own approach in real time. The course is often pared with our Leading Difficult Conversations training.

For over 25 years, GrahamComm has delivered this program to teams at leading companies across Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as clients worldwide. The workshop is grounded in GrahamComm's Behavior-Based Learning methodology: we deconstruct communication into clear, observable actions, then use live practice, peer feedback, and in-the-moment coaching to build lasting habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • GrahamComm's Mastering Communication Styles workshop teaches the four behavioral communication styles: Analytic, Expressive, Driver, and Amiable. Each style reflects a distinct combination of observable behaviors that shape how a person communicates, makes decisions, and builds relationships at work. Analytics value data, precision, and process. Expressives thrive on energy, vision, and collaboration. Drivers prioritize results, speed, and directness. Amiables focus on harmony, trust, and steady follow-through. You will learn to identify each style in yourself and others, then practice adapting your approach for stronger outcomes in every interaction.

  • While both GrahamComm's framework and DiSC use a four-quadrant behavioral model, our approach focuses on observable workplace behaviors rather than a scored personality assessment. We teach you to read assertive behaviors (pace, volume, gestures, posture) and responsive behaviors (tone, facial expressions, time orientation) in real time, so you can adapt on the spot. This makes the skills immediately transferable to meetings, negotiations, and everyday conversations. GrahamComm has refined this behavior-based methodology over 25 years of working with teams at companies like Samsung, Microsoft, PayPal, and eBay across Silicon Valley and beyond.

  • This workshop serves two audiences equally. For corporate L&D and HR buyers, it is an ideal team development program that builds a shared communication vocabulary across departments, improves cross-functional collaboration, and strengthens leadership effectiveness. For individual professionals and managers, it is a career-accelerating skill set that helps you influence more effectively, navigate conflict, and build stronger relationships with colleagues, direct reports, clients, and executives. The content applies to every role and every level, from individual contributors and engineers to senior directors and C-suite leaders.

  • Participants leave with a practical system for recognizing all four communication styles and adapting their approach in real time. Specific outcomes include increased awareness of your own communication tendencies, sharper ability to read nonverbal cues, more productive conversations with colleagues who have different styles, and a personalized Action List with the top three skills to practice going forward. Teams consistently report better meetings, faster decision-making, reduced friction in cross-functional projects, and stronger client relationships in the weeks following the workshop.

  • Yes. GrahamComm delivers Mastering Communication Styles both in person at your location and virtually. The in-person format is ideal for teams that want to practice reading body language and physical cues in real time. The virtual format uses breakout rooms, live polling, and interactive exercises to create engagement from anywhere. Both formats include a pre-workshop style assessment, live coaching, peer feedback, and a post-session Action List. GrahamComm is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and works with clients across the US and internationally.

  • Three things set GrahamComm apart. First, our Behavior-Based Learning methodology focuses on observable actions, not simply labeling personality types. Second, our "Make it Fun" principle means the workshop is high-energy, interactive, and genuinely enjoyable, which is why participants consistently rate it among the best training experiences of their careers. Third, we have been doing this for over 25 years. We believe in practice, feedback, and real behavioral change.

  • We recommend 8 to 16 participants for the optimal learning experience, though we can customize for larger groups. The workshop is available in a half-day format (approximately 4 hours) or a full-day format (approximately 7 hours). The full-day version includes more extensive practice scenarios, deeper exploration of each style, and additional coaching time. Every program is tailored to your team's specific challenges, industry context, and communication goals. We pride ourselves on being flexible and easy to work with.

  • Absolutely. GrahamComm is headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area and regularly delivers programs at client offices throughout Silicon Valley, across the United States, and internationally. We have worked on-site with teams at some of the world's most recognized companies and can set up in your conference room, offsite venue, or training facility.

  • Yes. Learning to recognize and adapt to different communication styles is one of the most effective skills a salesperson or account manager can develop. When you understand that a Driver wants bottom-line results while an Analytic needs detailed evidence, you can tailor your pitch, your follow-up, and your negotiation style accordingly. Teams that have gone through this program report improved client rapport, shorter sales cycles, and stronger retention rates.

  • Every participant leaves with a personal Action List documenting their top three development priorities. GrahamComm also provides follow-up resources and optional post-workshop coaching sessions to reinforce the behaviors learned during the program. We encourage teams to adopt the four style names (Analytic, Expressive, Driver, Amiable) as a shared vocabulary in daily interactions, which creates an ongoing reinforcement loop.

Let’s talk about improving your communication skills.
