Every Great Presenter Knows Their Audience. Mine Just Started Using AI to Find Me.

The first thing I teach every executive I coach is to know their audience before they walk into the room. Who are they? What do they care about? How do they make decisions? Your content, your delivery, your entire strategy needs to be built around how your audience thinks and behaves, not how you wish they would.

I have been giving that advice for 25 years. In 2026, I applied it to my own business.

Here is what I noticed. The executives I coach, C-suite leaders, financial services partners, learning and development directors, were changing how they research vendors. The same people who have always relied on their networks and Google for recommendations were increasingly opening ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini before they even made a call to a colleague. Not instead of asking their network. Before. They wanted to arrive at that conversation already informed.

"Best executive presentation coach for investor meetings." "Top presentation skills training firms in San Francisco." "Who specializes in coaching for financial services executives?"

I asked myself the same question I ask every client before a high-stakes presentation: is your message reaching the audience where they actually are? For GrahamComm in 2026, the honest answer was no.

What I Did About It:

Referrals are still the foundation of this business and always will be. In 25 years, almost every meaningful client relationship has started with an introduction or a recommendation from someone who had experienced our work firsthand. That is not changing. But I recognized that AI search had become the research layer that sits before the referral conversation, not after it. Getting found there was not a replacement for reputation. It was a new way to make that reputation visible.

In early 2026, I partnered with Elevate AI Consulting (elevateaiconsulting.com), an AI strategy firm based in Miami that specializes in Answer Engine Optimization. They conducted a full audit of how GrahamComm appeared across AI search platforms, built out all of the technical infrastructure, and produced the optimization strategy for the entire site. It was the right call. Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring your website's content and technical data so that AI assistants including Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini can accurately read, understand, and recommend your business when buyers ask relevant questions.

The work covered more than 20 pages on grahamcomm.net over roughly ten weeks. Every major service page, from Executive Speaker Coaching to Presentation Skills Training to the Testimonials page, was restructured so that AI models could clearly identify what we do, who we serve, what results our clients have achieved, and what makes our approach distinct from generic public speaking training. Two long-form articles were published with full technical optimization on the day they went live. The Testimonials page, which had not been indexed by Google at all, was rebuilt and resubmitted for indexing.

I reviewed, approved and implemented everything. It had to sound like GrahamComm.

What Happened:

Before this work, my contact form was essentially decorative. In 25 years, not much had ever come through it. Business came through referrals, conference connections, and long-standing relationships. The form existed but rarely generated anything worth following up on.

In under 90 days, GrahamComm went from receiving almost no website inquiries to generating more than 15 inbound leads through the contact form, including buyers from financial services, technology, construction, and international markets across Europe and Asia.

Several of those leads came specifically through AI platforms. One financial services buyer told me they had searched for executive presentation coaching firms using multiple prompts across Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT before landing on our site and reaching out. Another international inquiry cited Gemini and an internal AI tool as part of their research process before contacting us.

I also had a personal moment of confirmation. I asked a family member in another city to search for the top presentation training firms in the San Francisco Bay Area. GrahamComm came up second in Google's AI-generated answer, behind a major national firm. For a boutique practice like mine, that was significant.

The referral network that built this business over 25 years is still running at full strength. What changed is that a second channel opened alongside it, one that runs 24 hours a day and reaches buyers we may never have encountered through our existing network alone.

What This Means for Any Leader Running a Professional Services Firm:

I teach executives that the best communicators are not the ones who wait to be discovered. They are the ones who understand where their audience is paying attention and show up there with clarity and authority.

In 2026, part of your audience is paying attention to AI. They are asking Claude and ChatGPT and Gemini for recommendations before they ask their colleagues. If your business is not structured in a way that those platforms can read and cite, you are invisible during a critical phase of the buyer's journey, even when your reputation is genuinely strong.

Answer Engine Optimization did not replace 25 years of relationships. It made 25 years of reputation visible to an entirely new audience that was already looking for exactly what we do.

Knowing your audience and meeting them where they are is the foundation of every great presentation. It turns out it is also the foundation of being found.

  • Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a website's content and technical data so that AI platforms including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity can read, understand, and recommend the business when buyers ask relevant questions. Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on appearing in a ranked list of links, Answer Engine Optimization determines whether your business is the direct answer an AI assistant provides when a buyer asks a question without clicking any search result at all.

  • Traditional SEO helps your website appear in Google's link results. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) determines whether your firm appears as a direct recommendation when someone asks an AI assistant "Who are the best executive presentation coaches in San Francisco?" or "What firms specialize in coaching for investor meetings?" As more buyers use AI platforms to research and validate vendors before reaching out to their network, AEO works alongside referrals and traditional search rather than replacing them.
